Notes and Observations: Fall Practice (No. 6)

The Trojans practiced in the newly renovated Coliseum and for a practice following a full pads scrimmage, I was impressed with the physicality. Today guys were finishing tackles and laying hits which was a surprise considering Helton said today would be a light practice. Practice began with the Quaterbarks doing 1 on 1 drills in the Red Zone. The Cornerbacks dominated this session and this was an opportunity for the Freshman CBs to show off their technique. Isaac Taylor-Stuart, Olaijah Griffin, and Biggie Marshall were the standouts from this drill.

From here the team broke off into position groups and we had a chance to watch Neil Callaway work with his O-line guys directly in front of us. Callaway is very vocal with his men and will get on them if they mess up. His coaching technique resembles a drill instructor but the players describe him as a "Bundle of Joy" off the field.  After getting pushed around early in camp, Callaway's unit faired much better during the full scrimmage.  When I asked why they looked better, Offensive Coordinator Tee Martin said the difference was very simple, "Shorts and Pads." During this session, Toa Lobendahn was on the sideline working on his snaps.

The team then finished practice with a scrimmage session.

The first offensive is as follows:

LT: Austin Jackson LG: Chris Brown C: Toa Lobendahn RG: Andrew Vorhees RT: Clayton Bradley

Here are the results from the scrimmage:

Daniels overthrows Amon-Ra St.Brown deep. Iman Marshall was in coverage.
Daniels hits Ced Ware for a 10 yard gain
Daniels to J. Imatorbhebhe for a 15 yard gain. He beat Isaiah Langley downfield on this place.
Daniels finds Vaughns on a short curl route who was immediately pushed out by Langley and Kana’i Mauga.

Fink hits Tyler Vaughns but the play is broken up by Langley. Echols was about to sack Fink.
Fink throws to Tyler Petite but the pass is incomplete. Olaijah Griffin was in coverage on this play.
Fink overthrows Velus Jones deep in the endzone, OG and CJ Pollard were in coverage.
Fink overthrows Josh Imatorbhebhe who was covered by Dom Davis.

Sears to Amon-Ra St.Brown for a TD.  Sears threw it deep and St. Brown out ran OG.
Sears to Ced Ware on a screen play few yards, stopped by Echols.
Sears sacked by Reuben Peters and other defenders.
Sears airs it out J.Imatorbhebhe but it's incomplete. OG was right there to knock it down.

Daniels hits Erik Krommenhoek on a short slant.  OG was in coverage
Daniels throws but the pass is batted at the line by Juliano Falaniko.
Daniels to Ced Ware out of the backfield incomplete. There was confusion on this play and Ced treid to adjust to make the grab but couldn't hang on.

Daniels throws deep to Amon-Ra St.Brown who dives to make the catch in the endzone but the ball is knocked out by the ground. Would've been a great Mater Dei connection TD.

Daniels throws to Velus Jones who drops in the ball in the middle of the field. Velus Jones has been better catching the ball better this Spring and Fall camp. This was a rare mistake from him.
Daniels to Petite incomplete. Reuben Peters covered Petite on this play.

Fink throws a screen to Josh I. who is met by 5 defenders at the line.
Fink throws to Ced Ware but the pass is incomplete after Greg Johnson lays a big hit.

Sears is sacked on the next play. Raymond Scott was in the area but I'm not sure who made the sack.

Sears pass batted at the line but it's then caught by Stephen Carr for a minimal gain.
Daniels hits Velus Jones on a short pass. He is then immediately brought down by Talanoa Hufanga.
Stephen Carr takes the handoff for a minimal gain.

The defense was very happy at the end of the practice and were taunting the offense. The defense has been dominant this whole camp, showing off the tremendous depth they have at each position. Brandon Pili seemed to be the happiest player at the end shouting "That's what I'm talking about!", numerous times.
